Margaret Knight ’21
I worked as a research intern at the Bassett Research Institute and collaborated with the New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health (NYCAMH). With the COVID-19 pandemic continuing into the summer and fall months, concerns arise for maintaining a safe work environment in the agricultural sector- an industry that is reliant on temporary and immigrant workers. While farmworker housing can be provided either through the employer or paid for by the farmworker, housing facilities typically bring together migratory population who end up living in tight quarters. These circumstances make social distancing measures difficult and as a result, actions to protect farmworkers against the virus are needed. This summer I helped create a web-based tool to help farmers assess various strategies for mitigating the risk of spreading COVID-19 in a multi-occupant, housing environment. In addition, I conducted a literature review to assess current validation methods in coronavirus modeling literature.
