Major: Environmental Science

This summer I worked for the Duke-Margolis Center for health policy conducting geospatial analysis research to understand the particularly high burden of diabetes in Durham county, North Carolina. I approached this question from both a health policy lens and environmental science background to understand the impact of atmospheric pollutants on local communities. While gaining literature review and technical data analysis skills, I also expanded my toolbox to learn a great deal about the real-life workings of academic research and writing process. Though remote work was often frustrating and lacking personal connection, I certainly improved my time management and independence skills. The most impactful result of the summer was learning that public health really isn’t as much for me as I previously thought. As I enter my senior year, I am thankful for the support of the Margolis team, but can confidently progress with aspirations for graduate school in environmental science rather than public health.
