Julieta Lechini ’22
This summer (winter in this hemisphere) I worked in Idas y Vueltas, the only local NGO in Uruguay focused on providing help and assistance to immigrants. I started as a research intern, but due to the pandemic was asked to join forces in other areas such as First needs and Housing. Personally this was also my first experience working in the area of Anthropology in my country, where the discipline works completely different than from the United States. I was able to explore grass-root movements and collaborative work from the area of applied Anthropology. Some of the work I was involved in included; organizing and helping at the new “Ollas Populares” (street soup kitchens) which started to appear due to the pandemic, assisting immigrants with housing-related issues, such as displacement, lack of housing, mediation, etc. and the welcome space where we provide with general information and guidance.
