This summer, I worked remotely as a field intern for the Maine Democratic Party. Maine was in the midst of a delayed Democratic primary for Senate and began gearing up for the hotly contested and consequential general election in November. I worked with organizers in Cumberland, Sagadahoc, and Knox counties to contact voters in these regions. My role consisted of two main responsibilities: phone banking and training volunteers to make calls. With the help of the voter protection team, I assisted voters in requesting and turning in absentee ballots in July. In addition, I learned to lead remote trainings for volunteers and honed my volunteer recruitment skills. Throughout the summer, I got to hear from employees within the organization about their specific job/department and the pathway they took to get there which helped develop my understanding of the organization’s inner functioning. The skills I learned from fellow organizers and stories I heard from voters in Maine I plan to take with me into future work.
