This summer, I worked for the Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute (OSWLI). The mission of the OSWLI is to raise the aspirations and increase the confidence of high school girls by helping them develop the skills necessary to become a leader in their families, careers, and communities. When Senator Snowe decided not to seek reelection in 2012, she looked for new ways to improve Maine and aid its people. Following 40 years of public service, Senator Snowe knew firsthand the importance of having women with strong voices and creative ideas in leadership positions. After researching the challenges facing young women, Senator Snowe settled on addressing the issue of confidence in girls during a critical growth period of their lives, high school. Olympia Snowe’s personal and professional career has inspired young women throughout Maine and across the country. Her accomplishments and resilience, despite many obstacles, have made her a role model for many. Out of her values and successes, she developed the Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute in 2015. The Institute now serves girls from 36 schools across the state. The vision of the Institute is to serve as a national model for enabling young girls to recognized their own potential and achieve success.
