Andres Madrigal ‘22
Major: Organismal Biology & Ecology
This summer, I interned remotely with the Western Organization for People Living with AIDS/HIV (WOPLAH) with a team of student interns from Colorado College. Due to COVID-19, the other student interns and I were unable to travel to Mumias, Kenya. However, through virtual communication, we were able to learn about the daily operations of WOPLAH’s various projects. As remote interns our main tasks included applying for emergency COVID-19 relief grants and specific project grants from organizations such as the Coca-Cola Foundations, the Gilead Foundation, Frontline AIDS and the Open Society Initiative for East Africa. In addition to grant writing, our team worked on updating and redesigning WOPLAH’s website and blog. I also created a LinkedIn profile for the organization. Throughout the summer, I participated in weekly Zoom meetings with the student intern staff and WOPLAH’s Program Coordinator, Edwin Wetoyi, to create various collaborative internship projects.
