This summer, I worked remotely as an intern for Western Organization of People Living with HIV/AIDS (WOPLAH) through the GlobeMed GROW internship. WOPLAH is a non-profit organization that aims to improve healthcare accessibility for HIV/AIDS positive individuals and reduce stigma associated with an HIV diagnosis. I focused on finding and applying for project-specific and COVID-19 related grants in order to obtain sustainable sources of funding for WOPLAH. Additionally, I helped update WOPLAH’s website and blog to reflect new details regarding WOPLAH’s projects and developed a video to summarize WOPLAH’s work. This summer, I not only gained the technical skills required for tasks such as grant writing and video development, but I also learned how to best manage my time and improve communication while working across time-zones. Additionally, I learned about the logistics of running a non-profit organization and community-based approaches to improving healthcare.
